Frequently asked questions

USA
PLANNING & REQUIREMENTS
DO I NEED A MOTORCYCLE LICENSE TO TAKE PART IN A TOUR?

Yes, a valid motorcycle driving license from your home country is mandatory to take part in any of our guided tours.

HOW MUCH RIDING EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?

We hate to turn anybody away due to lack of experience, but for your own safety it’s important you feel comfortable riding a touring motorcycle on an interstate, as well as through mountain passes. If you’re at all nervous, you may be interested in our pre-tour rental packages, which give you time to get used to the bike before you join the main group. Ask your specialist for details.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO GO ON A TOUR?

You have to be at least 21 years old to rent a motorcycle from EagleRider and participate as a rider on a tour. There is no age restriction for passengers as long as you can touch the footrests with your feet flat on the platform.

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME TO GO AND WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?

Obviously, weather can be unpredictable and changes all the time, but if you go in the main summer months you should have around a 90% chance of staying dry on all our tours. It will always be a little cool on the west coast and when you’re riding in the Rockies. And you can always expect some rain along Route 66. The best thing is to come prepared, to bring your rain gear and be ready for all conditions.

ARE THE TOURS SUITABLE FOR TWO-UP RIDING?

Absolutely. Passengers are very welcome to ride pillion and tours are priced with both single rider and pillion options. If you’re looking to ride two-up, we can also advise you on what bikes are most suitable.

DEPOSITS, CANCELLATIONS & COVID
DO I NEED TO PAY A DEPOSIT UP FRONT?

Yes. For guided tours only and booked more than 45 days before the start date, a minimum deposit of £250 per person is required at the time of booking. The remaining balance must be paid in full 45 days prior to the tour start date. Otherwise, a full payment is required at the time of booking. Deposit terms for bookings including flights and pre and/or post tour hotel arrangements will vary and be advised at the time of booking.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL MY TOUR?

For tour only bookings if you cancel more than 45 days prior to departure, you’ll receive your money back by way of a future credit. Cancelling between 44 and 31 days out from your start date will carry a 50% cancellation fee and the remainder will be credit. Cancelling inside of 30 days would carry a 100% cancellation fee. Cancellation terms for bookings including flights and pre and/or post tour hotel arrangements will vary and be advised at the time of booking.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY TOUR CANNOT GO AHEAD DUE TO COVID-19?

We offer a flexible money-back policy on any tour that cannot go ahead due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. This also applies to your deposit and means you’re covered should the tour you booked get cancelled or should US travel restrictions hinder your entrance to the States *

BIKES & GEAR
WHAT BIKE WILL I RIDE?

Book a Tread tour and we will endeavour to get your motorbike of choice from the huge range of makes and models available through EagleRider.

I OWN MY OWN BIKE; CAN I RIDE IT ON A GUIDED TOUR?

Yes, you can ride your own bike and the cost of your tour will be adjusted accordingly and quoted on an individual basis. That said, it’s much cheaper and easier to use an EagleRider bike than it is to ship or fly your own bike to the States.

SHOULD I TAKE MY OWN HELMET?

We highly recommend you take your own helmet. EagleRider do provide half-shell helmets free of charge, but they are basic helmets and not always the most comfortable for a long tour. Some people get on with them fine but for others they just don’t fit right.

WHAT OTHER PROTECTIVE GEAR SHOULD I BRING?

We recommended you bring protective leathers, including jacket and trousers, as well as gloves and sturdy boots. You’ll be sent a detailed ‘suggested packing’ list before you travel, and should you forget anything, the majority of EagleRider locations have motorcycle gear and accessories for sale, including helmets, gloves, chaps, jackets and riding glasses.

SHOULD I ALSO BRING RAIN GEAR?

Yes, a light set of rain gear is recommended, even if you’re riding in summer.

HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I BRING??

Each rider or passenger can bring one large suitcase and one carry-on size bag. These will be carried in the support vehicle and transported free of charge along the route.

DO ALL BIKES HAVE A WINDSHIELD?

Most EagleRider bikes are available with a windshield at no extra cost. Some smaller model bikes may not include a windshield so be sure to ask your Tread specialist.

IS FUEL AND OIL INCLUDED IN THE TOUR PRICE?

Yes, fuel and oil for your bike are included on all scheduled riding days – a benefit that really demonstrates the great value of these tours. If you choose to ride on a rest day, the cost of fuel is not covered.

DO YOU OFFER HELMET COMMUNICATION DEVICES?

While not standard on motorcycle rentals, helmet communication devices are available for purchase at most EagleRider locations, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Denver, New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando and Chicago.

ARE RENTAL MOTORCYCLES EQUIPPED TO POWER ITEMS SUCH AS A GPS, IPOD OR SMART PHONE?

Certain models, including the Harley-Davidson Street Glide, Electra Glide and Road Glide, have power outlets built into the fairing. If you order an EagleRider GPS as part of your rental package, an EagleRider technician will wire it directly to the motorcycle’s power source.

ON THE ROAD
HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN A TOUR GROUP?

Tour groups typically comprise around eight to 15 bikes. We love these smaller group sizes as you get to make friends and really bond with your fellow riders.

WHAT ARE THE GUIDES LIKE?

EagleRider guides and tour leaders are some of the best in the business. They quickly get a feel for the needs and desires of each group and will always do their best to accommodate special requests. They know the routes inside out and take joy in showing riders the best photo spots, saloons, restaurants, attractions and hidden roads along the way. In fact, so good is the reputation of EagleRider guides that some customers book their tours based solely on what routes a certain tour guide is leading.

HOW MANY MILES SHOULD I EXPECT TO RIDE EACH DAY?

You’ll typically ride around 200 to 250 miles each day, with the occasional 300-mile day thrown in for good measure.

DO WE RIDE EVERY DAY?

Some tours include a rest day but you will ride most days. But groups stop often to enjoy sights and attractions and to ensure riders are well rested and moving at a leisurely pace.

WILL THERE BE A SUPPORT VEHICLE?

Yes, one of the main advantages of booking with Tread is the reassurance of a support vehicle accompanying every tour. This vehicle will not only carry the group’s luggage but also a spare bike.

CAN I GO IN THE SUPPORT VEHICLE IF I GET TIRED?

While EagleRider will always try to accommodate the needs of its guests, please be aware that these are motorcycle touring holidays. The support vehicle is designed only to carry customers in the event of an emergency.

WHAT’S THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE ON TOUR?

EagleRider has put a lot of thought into selecting accommodation that’s representative of where you’re riding through. You might stay in a 4-star hotel in downtown Chicago one night, then be sleeping in an historic Route 66 motel the next. Or ride straight from a resort on the Las Vegas Strip to a mountainside lodge by Yosemite National Park. All are motorcycle friendly and offer clean beds, hot showers and bags of character.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET A FLAT TYRE OR IF MY BIKE BREAKS DOWN?

A good servicing and preventative maintenance regime ensures all bikes are in excellent mechanical order before the start of each tour. Breakdowns and flat tyres are therefore extremely rare. But should the unlikely happen, the support team will endeavour to get you back on the road as soon as possible. Should they not be able to fix the problem roadside, a spare motorcycle, carried in the support vehicle, will be made available to you.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
ARE FLIGHTS INCLUDED?

Flights are not included in the published tour price but because we’re also a fully licensed tour operator, we’ll happily book flights for you along with your tour. That way, you only need to deal with one person to arrange your whole holiday. What’s more, because we hold an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) issued by the Civil Aviation Authority, all our motorcycle tours booked in conjunction with flights are financially protected by ATOL.

DO YOU PROVIDE AIRPORT TRANSFERS?

One of the perks of booking though Tread is taking full advantage of our tour operator status. This includes allowing us to arrange private transfers from your arrival airport to your pre- tour hotel and from your final hotel to your departure airport.

CAN YOU ASSIST WITH BOOKING HOTELS BEFORE AND AFTER MY TOUR?

We’ll happily recommend and book hotels for before or after your tour, often based on our first-hand experience of travelling in the region. A few nights at a luxury hotel can be a wonderful way to lift the whole experience, either as a means to acclimatise before a trip, or – better still – to celebrate after.

CAN I COMBINE MY MOTORCYCLE TOUR WITH A TAILOR-MADE HOLIDAY?

Of course. Riding a Harley across the States might well be your dream, but it might not tick the boxes of your closest friends or family. So why not have them meet you at the end of your ride for a tailor-made holiday you can all enjoy together? We can arrange their flights and transfers and design a whole itinerary around the interests of the group, whether that’s family fun at Disneyland, wine tasting in the valleys of northern California, or spotting gray whales off the Baja Peninsula.
