Pacific Coast Highway

Overview

The Pacific Coast Highway is America’s dream drive – over 1,500 miles of breathtaking seascapes from Seattle in the north to Los Angeles in the south. Yet for a route often touted as a highway to heaven, it’s surprisingly quiet. Not until you hit southern California will you meet much traffic, and then only in urban areas. Small harbour towns with amazing places to eat dot the route, as do mile upon mile of pristine, untouched beaches. Mists roll in then disappear as quickly as they came. Pelicans and other seabirds wheel overhead. Sealions and elephant seals bask on rocky shorelines. And migrating grey whales can often be spotted in the brilliant blue Pacific.

The route starts in Seattle and winds its way south past Ocean Shores and Newport, through the giant redwoods of northern California to the City by the Bay, sensational San Francisco. South of San Fran, an uncontested highlight is the astonishing stretch of coast from Monterey to San Simeon, a serpentine ribbon of highway winding 500 to 1,000 feet above the roaring Pacific through the seascapes of Big Sur. From there it’s on to the ‘American Riviera’, stylish Santa Barbara, before setting your sights on the Hollywood hills and the glamour of LA. If you’ve always dreamt of that ultimate west coast ride, then this is the tour for you.

Seattle, WA – Arrival

Distance: 0 mi / km

The coffee-and-craft-beer city of Seattle makes an ideal launchpad for this monumental motorcycle tour. Speak to your Tread travel specialist about arriving a few days early to take in the sights, like Pike Place Market and the iconic Space Needle.

Seattle, WA – Ocean Shores, WA

Distance: 247 mi / 395 km

After picking up your bike at EagleRider’s Seattle office, begin your tour with a different kind of ride – a ferry ride across the Puget Sound to the Olympia Peninsula. Then wind your way along the coast through Olympic National Park past soaring cliffs and sea stacks, sandy beaches and primeval rainforests to Ocean Shores, a coastal town known for its long Pacific beach.

Ocean Shores, WA – Newport, OR

Distance: 230 mi / 398 km

You’ll spend most of today on the incredible Highway 101 that connects Washington with its neighbouring state, Oregon. There’s a real sense of adventure to the riding today, as the road hugs the coast past places like Aberdeen (the hometown of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain), Long Beach, Astoria and Cannon Beach, home to Haystack Rock, one of the most famous sea stacks on the whole Pacific coast.

Newport, OR – Crescent City, CA

Distance: 237 mi / 379 km

Continue south down the 101 passing yet more of Oregon’s tumultuous coastline, where galloping waves crash on empty, dramatic beaches. The Pacific Coast Highway enters California just north of today’s final stop, Crescent City, set on a beautiful crescent-shaped bay.

Crescent City, CA – Fort Bragg, CA

Distance: 220 mi / 352 km

After Crescent City, the Pacific Coast Highway starts to navigate in and away from the coast at places, affording you the opportunity to ride through Redwood National Park, home to the world’s tallest trees, some of them five stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. You’ll still be marvelling at their enormity when you reach Fort Bragg, whose stunning Pacific views have changed little since the city was founded before the American Civil War.

Fort Bragg, CA – San Francisco, CA

Distance: 185 mi / 296 km

Today you’ll reach the second of the three major cities that are highlights of this tour: San Francisco. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the city after checking into your hotel. Hop on one of San Francisco’s famous cable cars – the only national historic landmark that moves – or legendary street trolleys. Watch the street performers at Ghirardelli Square, or explore Nob Hill, Chinatown and Haight-Ashbury, home to Alamo Square’s famous ‘Painted Ladies’, a brightly painted row of Victorian and Edwardian houses.

San Francisco, CA – Monterey, CA

Distance: 120 mi / 192 km

Wave goodbye to San Francisco and ride south around the bay to magical Monterey, a city of smart boutiques and restaurants, galleries, shops and colonial Spanish buildings. Perhaps pop into the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the best in the state, and be sure to leave time to follow 17 Mile Drive around the coast to Carmel, passing beautiful Pebble Beach and its famous golf course.

Monterey, CA – Pismo Beach, CA

Distance: 157 mi / 251 km

The glorious coast road between Monterey and San Simeon is an uncontested highlight of a trip already brimming with breathtaking ocean views. The highway literally clings to America’s western edge, snaking its way above the surf-carved seascapes of Big Sur, a coastal wilderness where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the roaring Pacific Ocean. Pfeiffer Beach is especially breathtaking, and elephant seals gather year-round at Point Piedras Blancas, just north of San Simeon. Pulses calm slightly from here, as you ride through charming San Luis Obispo to Pismo Beach.

Pismo Beach, CA – Los Angeles, CA

Distance: 176 mi / 282 km

Continue south to Santa Barbara, an idyllic town at the foot of the dramatic Santa Ynez Mountains, sometimes referred to as the American Riviera. From here it’s the home straight as you ride to Los Angeles, return your bike and prepare for your journey home.

Los Angeles, CA – Tour ends

Distance: 0 mi / km

The tour officially ends today but let us know if you’d like us to arrange any additional nights for you in LA or elsewhere in California. Perhaps you’d like to head back north to see more of Santa Barbara, whose wineries are often compared to those of Napa’s 30 years ago? Or continue south down the Pacific Coast Highway to sizzling San Diego, America’s self-styled ‘finest city’?
